Division 3, formerly Comp 3 or C3, soccer provides for the development of players who can benefit from playing soccer at a higher level. Games are fast paced and played aggressively. Division 3 players are expected to have a higher level of commitment and better skills than the average recreational soccer player does. Division 3 is now called Advanced Soccer, but Developmental is a more accurate term. Players must participate in a tryout and be selected for the team, but, as in recreational or Class IV Soccer, league standings are not emphasized. Just as in Class IV, it is assumed that every player in good standing will play at least half of every game.
If there are enough teams, league games are played in Santa Cruz County, otherwise teams will play half of their games in Santa Clara. In addition to league games, each team usually attends two or three tournaments. Most tournaments are in the Bay Area.
Teams purchase uniforms and pay for the tournament fees. Some teams hire one or more trainers. The Club provides a modest stipend, but most money comes from the parents, sponsors, or fundraising events. Most teams work together to cover costs and provide scholarships for players. Costs are in addition to club registration fees.
The Club will hold open tryouts for each age group. Every player registered with the Club is welcome and encouraged to come out. There are two tryout sessions for each age group and players should attend both sessions. If for some reason you can only attend one session, make sure you talk with a Club representative. The coaches and representatives from the Club will strive to ensure that all players are dealt with fairly and consistently. Except for the U19 group, a player not assigned to a Division 3 team will be put onto a recreational team.
