Recreation FAQ

Most questions can be answered by looking over the new Mid County Soccer website.  

What are Rec or Recreation Teams?

Rec which stands for Recreation is the largest program of Santa Cruz Mid-County Youth Soccer. Over 500 kids play on our Fall Recreation Teams!  Recreation means everyone gets to play. No tryouts!

When is registration?

Registration for the Fall Recreation league runs from March 1st -May 31st. If space is available late registration will run from May 1st- May 31st.



Registrations received after July 1st will be placed on waiting list.*

*If registration form is received after May 31st and there is no additional room we will return registration fees and the child will not be registered.

Question: What is the youngest age a child must be in order to register?

Answer: Players  to qualify for the U6 group.

Question: When does the season start?

Answer: The Fall season begins in mid-August and ends before Thanksgiving.

Question: What equipment do I need?

Answer: Each child needs cleats, shin guards, soccer socks, water bottle and a soccer ball for practices. Soccer balls come in different sizes; #3 for U8, #4 for U10 & U12, #5 for U14 and up. Many sporting goods stores and others offer soccer supplies. Ask your coach or contact the club if you have further questions.

Question: What do you have to do to become a volunteer for mid county soccer?

Answer: To coach or be on the board of directors you have to get live scanned through Cal North Soccer the Northern California governing organization.  All volunteers are livescanned and continually monitored by Cal North.  More info here

Question: When will I hear from my coach?

Answer: All coaches will have completed the coaches training by August 15th. Coaches will contact team members by the middle of August.  Please be sure your contact information is correct.

Question: How often are practices held?

Answer: Each volunteer coach chooses his practice time and field and will let the players know this information when he/she contacts them in mid August. Most practices are held Tuesday/Thursday or Monday/Wednesday for an hour to an hour-and-a-half at local practice fields (see Fields page). Some coaches vary the times and days.

Question: When are recreation games and is there co-ed teams?

Answer: Girls and Boys have separate teams. Games are on Saturdays, older teams may have a Sunday game here and there. Game times vary throughout the day. We try to form teams based on the neighborhood

Question: What is the structure of the Under 6 teams?

Answer: Games are also on Saturdays and have the following structure:  15-20 minute practice followed by 2 15 minutes halves for game. Scores are not kept. U6 teams practice 1 hour a week.

Question: What is the refund policy?

Answer: All refund requests must be in writing. Requests received before August 31st will be refunded less a $32 processing fee.. NO REFUNDS AFTER September 1st.

Question: Can I request a coach or team?

Answer: We do not take special team, friend or coach requests.

How We Form Our Recreation Teams It is the goal of Mid-County Youth Soccer to make balanced teams,based as much as possible around the player's neighborhood and/or school. In attempting to balance the teams, age group coordinators will consider the player's age, school grade and soccer experience. A player may not request a coach nor may a coach request a player (of course, a coach's child will be assigned to his/her team).

Coaches for our recreation teams are all volunteers.

A coach will choose the practice time and location that fits his or her schedule

It is the policy of Mid-County Youth Soccer not to make changes in rosters once the teams are created.

We try our best to make balanced neighborhood teams and cannot accommodate each family's busy schedule or requests.

Coaches may not add or drop players from their rosters. Only the club registrar may add new players. Rosters are made with the players whose registrations are complete when the registration period ends.

Late registrations may be accepted but players will be placed with teams on a space available basis only.

If MCYSC cannot accommodate players because of space, we will refer parents to other local clubs that may have space.**

*These guidelines may be modified to give consideration to households with multiple players or families with hardships although we cannot guarantee that your requests will be accommodated.

For hardship considerations families must provide this information by attaching a note at the time of registration.

It maybe impossible to make changes after rosters have been completed.
